Community Mental Health- A new path forward

There are only 4500 psychiatrists for 1.4 billion which is roughly 1 psychiatrist per 300,000. The need is overwhelming and seems beyond redeeming! But we turned the need into calling through pioneering an unique Community Mental Health Program ( CMHP) called Samvedna (Hindi): “Empathy” in the remote locations of the Himalayas. We used simple, available and existing resources of the community to provide effective mental health care through basic training and capacity building. This transformed the ordinary Community Mental Health Volunteers (CMHV) into champions who would close the mhGap.
