Trained at the University of California, Irvine (MD), the University of Utah (Pediatrics), and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (DTM&H), Phil practiced, taught, and researched pediatrics in northeastern Congo from 1985 through 1991. Now an academic general pediatrician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, he continues to teach at various places around the world. Active research includes studies of nutritional deficiencies (rickets, beri beri) and chronic fatigue. He and his wife, Juli, have five grown children, three of whom were born in Africa.
