When you think about rural America, what do you imagine? Quaint little towns with general stores? How about poverty, opiate addiction, and teen pregnancy? Employment opportunities are dwindling, educational quality is falling, and healthcare access is becoming increasingly more difficult. These are only a few of the issues that are plaguing our small towns; however, it seems as though rural America is struggling alone and unnoticed. In this talk, I will present some of the greatest problems facing our small towns and compare them with urban trends. I will also specifically focus on the vulnerable people of Appalachia. This will be an interactive session, as I will invite attendees to help me brainstorm what our response can be to the crisis occurring in rural America.
1. To encourage participants to become aware of the growing problems and injustices that are occurring in our small towns and to consider what can be done to reverse the current trends.
2. To encourage participants to consider how stereotypes and misunderstandings, especially of the Appalachian people, may be hurting a vulnerable population in our country.
3. To brainstorm together ways to engage rural America as Americans, Christians, and healthcare workers.
You want to live a life of significance that is humbly aligned to God’s purposes. In order to do that, you need to understand God’s call for, or will in, your life. The problem is, it doesn’t seem clear, and everyone you meet has a different perspective on “calling”, which makes you feel confused and stuck. What you need are tools to help you discern God’s call.
