This session will address systems solutions to short-term mission (STM) drug-related quality of care problems. The quality of care various STM systems are capable of providing varies tremendously:
-Well designed STM systems enable physicians, pharmacists and other providers to deliver high quality care and have the greatest possible impact for patient health and for the Kingdom.
-Inadequately designed STM systems provide poor quality care and often cause more harm than benefit regardless of the training and expertise of team leaders and providers.
We will assess mistakes made and lessons learned on over 45 global STMs, as well as 15 years long-term missions clinic practice in an area frequented by STMs. STM systems based on the work of missionary mentors, Jesus’ teaching and evidence based guidelines will also be reviewed.

Objectives

Assess critical systems problems inherent in Short-term Medical Missions (STM).
Identify simple evidence-based systems solutions to life threatening STM drug-related problems.
Review WHO guidelines based the work of missionary mentors, Jesus’ teaching , and scientific evidence.
Compare this holistic evidence-based approach to the STM drug-based approach.
Summarize Christian missionary contributions to WHO international standards and guidelines.
Identify how STM physicians, pharmacists and other providers can have the greatest impact for patient health and for the Kingdom.
Review Best Practice references founded on evidence-based international standards and guidelines.
